‘This is Saturdays conclusion: There are three people who scored well on the Pebble Beach course: Ted Schultz is the King of Pebble Beach after today. Ted shot a -8 on Pebble Beach. Ted is a 50 year-old who has won two PGA tournaments; the 1989 Southern Open and the 1991 Nissan Los Angeles Open. It has been a while for King Ted.

King of Del Monte, Mark Calcavecchia shot a -8 on Del Monte and -2 on Pebble Beach. Tom Pernice, Jr. shot a -6 on Pebble Beach and a -2 on Del Monte

Today 28 of the top 52 players shot a -1 or better on Pebble Beach that may go in Pebble Beach’s favor. More than half of the top 52 players shot under par.

In the end it is not definitive which course in more fair or less fair. It is not possible for me to separate early starts from later starts and we know that has an affect. Except that today Tom Pernice had an early start time on Del Monte and he blistered it with a -6. Today, Ted Schultz had a -8 on Pebble and an 8:47 tee time. But then there were plenty of people with early tee times who did not shoot that well.

Well, when three of the top three for both days played Pebble Beach today, I guess my theory will have to be determined correct another time. <———-

You can read Friday’s post below this line ————————————–>

Champions Tour meets Pebble Beach! And Pebble Beach is winning. What do I mean?

Out of the top twenty-four golfers, five played the Pebble Beach course. That means nineteen out of twenty-four of the best Senior golfers in the world did really well on a course that was not called Pebble Beach. That is 79% (19) of the Top 24 finishers today came from the Del Monte Golf Course. That is quite a disparity.

We will find out tomorrow because those who were on Pebble Beach today will move to Del Monte tomorrow and vice versa.

Now I would go through a lot of mumbo-jumbo detailing the careers of the golfers on Del Monte vs. the golfers on Pebble Beach, but I will not. I have seen this year after year. Generally, it is fair because golfers get a chance at both golf courses. Sometimes the weather is a bigger factor, but not this time. If you get those Pacific Ocean storms, Pebble Beach turns into a verifiable monster.

But keep an eye out for someone who can handle Pebble, for instance Tom Pernice, Jr. Pernice is in second place two strokes behind leader, Mark Calcavecchia. Now, I really like both golfers, but I have seen Pernice with amateurs and he is the genuine article as a nice human being. Most of the Tour Pros are great guys, but Pernice conducts a clinic on how these amateurs can hit better. This would normally be the day before the Tournament.

I have never seen Calc with amateurs, but I would be surprised if he is not out-going, too. When you watch these guys out there being themselves, you walk away with an understanding why golf is a great game.

So, tomorrow watch out for Pernice, Beck, Browne and Cook to see if they can take advantage of their really good showings on Pebble Beach.
