Happy Birthday Roger (rabbit) Maltbie

Roger Lin Maltbie was born in Modesto, California on June 30, 1951. Roger played on the PGA Tour and is an on-course analyst for NBC Sports and ESPN. Roger grew up in San Jose, CA. where he attended James Lick High School. Maltbie was a member of the golf team at both San Jose City College (1970–1971) and San Jose State University (1972).

Maltbie turned pro in 1973. He started playing on the PGA Tour in 1974. He was on the Tour full-time from 1975 – 1996. Maltbie won five official PGA Tour events between 1975 and 1985, including back-to-back wins in his first full year. He had more than 55 top-10 finishes. In 1985, he won two tournaments, earned $360,554, and finished 8th on the money list. His best finish in a major was a T-4 at the 1987 Masters. Maltbie calls losing that tournament the biggest disappointment of his career.

Maltbie began play on the Senior PGA Tour after turning 50 in June 2001. His best finish at this level is a 20th at the 2003 Baylor Advantage Invitational.

You may have seen a piece in the recent U.S. Opne Championship TV coverage where Maltbie spends the night in the parking lot of Bethpage and pickups up with three Long Island guys to play a round. This was actually a reprise of a 2002 piece where Maltbie played a round with the same three Long Island golfers. So, Roger got back together with Mike Finnegan, Lenny Mulqueen and Ed Rich at Bethpage and they spent the day doing Bethpage Black.

Maltbie is a very popular on camera personality. He is noted as the “common man’s” golfer, analyst with a sense of humor, the glue that holds the telecast together, 18th hole analyst, “the most interesting man in golf,” (Palm Beach Post) and Mr. Personality.  Indeed, when I covered the 2009 Accenture Tournament, it seemed at times that Maltbie was as popular as some of the golfers and maybe more popular than a few, who will remain unnamed. LOL. Roger can give and take the heat from the crowd as well as anyone. And after a little verbal confrontation with a ‘juiced up’ fan he is right back into his interview like nothing ever happened. Maltbie is a very  popular on the course and on TV.

Maltbie and wife, Donna, have two sons, Spencer and Parker.
