Who are they? One is Casey Wittenberg
Casey Wittenberg turned pro in 2004. In 2005 he entered 7 tournaments on the Nationwide Tour and 9 events on the PGA Tour. He made 7 cuts and earned about $74,000. In 2006 and 2007 Casey entered 5 tournaments on both tours. He made 2 cuts and $13,000.
Casey came back in 2008 playing 25 Nationwide events and 4 PGA Tournaments and made 18 and 2 cuts. He earned about $440,00. He was 15th on the Nationwide Tour which earned him a promotion to the PGA. this year he has entered 15 PGA events and had a top ten. That Top Ten finish was a tie for 7th at the Travelers. Casey has had flashes of showing off his best stuff – he shot a 63 in round 3 of the Bob Hope. Last year he tied for 4th in the Viking Classic.
Casey played golf at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK. Tracey grew up in Memphis, TN where he became an extraordinarily good amateur. Casey lost the 2003 U.S. Amateur Championship to Nick Flanagan (the 2007 Nationwide Tour Player of the Year) in the finals.
So, what happened to the amateur with great promise when he became a professional. Golf Magazine published a January 2009 article that pointed out that confidence should not be confused with cockiness. Casey’s brother was an amateur golfer who did not go on to the pro ranks. Casey’s dad, Jimmy Wittenberg Jr., was a former All-American golfer at LSU and was a pro. Casey’s grandfather, Jimmy Wittenberg Sr., captained the 1947 LSU golf team to an NCAA championship and played in seven U.S. Amateurs. The entire family maintains there is no pressure on Casey to continue playing golf. But Casey is confident that he can win at the professional level.
Now, Casey Wittenberg has started his best season at 24. When you see him hole a chop shot from off the green you get the sense that things are starting to come together. He has talked about being a kid in a Ledbetter golf school and then one day your on tour and golf is your entire life. Golf is 365 and it is a lot for a kid to get around. and then, stupid golf announcers (Gary Koch) look at a kid with mirror sunglasses and Koch sees a reflection of himself. And Koch talks about Casey’s arrogance and attitude like Casey has leprosy. that would okay with Duffer if it had ended there, but apparently Koch came back the next day on NBC and ripped the kid for the same event. Koch could not or was coached to not let it go. Either way this is the last you will ever read about Gary Koch on this website. To my knowledge Koch has never apologized for being an ass. SO, do not look for Koch’s birthday greetings on this website. Actually, when Casey Wittenberg wins his 7th PGA Tournament ot his first Major, I will mention that Casey has surpassed the idiot who called out an amateur kid and held him up to the workd for scorn.
Go get’em, Casey. Make this year your best year.
